Viktor Stepanenko is a social researcher and sociologist, and an expert in the issues of post-Soviet transformation and civil society development. He is a leading Research Fellow at the Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. He is the editor of the book Ukraine after Euromaidan: Challenges and Hopes (Bern: Peter Lang, 2015).

Project Summary
From the times of democratic revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe civil society has become one of the most widely used ideological slogans in the agenda of post-communist transformation. Democratic anti-totalitarian movements in the 1980s and 1990s effectively used the slogan of civil society for ideological justification of their struggle against pro-Soviet totalitarian regimes.
