Simon Schwartzman is an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Studies in Economic Policy in Rio de Janeiro (Casa das Garças), and is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. He graduated in sociology, political science and public administration from the Federal University in Minas Gerais, Brazil (1961), has a Master’s Degree in Sociology from the Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO) in Santiago, Chile (1963) and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (1973). He was a professor of sociology and political science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, University Research Institute in Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ), University of São Paulo, and president of the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
