Implications of DPRK-Russia Military Collaboration on Indo-Pacific and Transatlantic Security Dynamics

Project Summary

The recent military ties between the DPRK and Russia, two significant challengers to the international order based on the rule of law, has sparked concerns across the Indo-Pacific and Transatlantic. This partnership is viewed as symbolic of the growing interconnectedness of security dynamics in these distinct theaters. However, this is not the first instance where the close alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow has had a significant impact on international security. This research briefly traces the history of DPRK-Russia relations since the Korean War and examines the recent words and actions of the two sides regarding bilateral military collaborations to identify the key aspects and rationale behind the shift. The study concludes with policy recommendations aimed at strengthening concerted efforts in the Indo-Pacific and Transatlantic to address these challenges. In essence, this study aims to highlight the critical role of collaboration in strategic communications among value-based partners in the two regions.
