Wilson Center Project
“U.S. Strategy for the Caucasus and Eurasia”
Project Summary
Mr. Wimbush explores in this project the forces and ideas that could contribute to shaping alternative futures in Eurasia. Who are or will be the main actors? What factors will drive their competition? What might be their objectives and strategies, and where might strategies collide or converge? Mr. Wimbush embraces three interactive approaches. First, he explores the roles of Central Asian and Caucasian actors in the unfolding of Eurasia’s strategic landscape, as well as the place of Central Asia and the Caucasus in the strategies of others. Second, he employs classic “alternative futures” exercises, like scenario planning and interactive simulations, or wargames, as a defined element of the program. Third, Mr. Wimbush will convene a small Strategy Group that will explore the new landscapes described in the first two elements of the project and consider consequences for strategy of both the United States and its competitors.
