Expert Bio
Dr. Michael J. Geary is a Global Fellow with the Wilson Center’s Global Europe Program and an Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. A native of Ireland, he has held distinguished residential fellowships at the Wilson Center, the College of Europe, and the University of Basel. Geary has also held a visiting Fulbright-Schuman professorship at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
He is the author of two books and numerous articles on the European Union, EU integration, and Europe-U.S. relations. He has lectured widely in Europe, North America, and South-East Asia on contemporary European issues. A first-class graduate of the National University of Ireland, he holds a Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence. After his doctorate, Geary was an intern at the EU Council of Ministers in Brussels.
His research interests include the European Union, BREXIT, transatlantic relations, British-Irish relations and comparative European politics and government. His op-eds have appeared in The National Interest, Euractiv, The Hill’s Congress Blog, and the EUObserver, and he is frequently quoted in The Guardian, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Associated Press, BBC News, CNN, and Reuters.
