Expert Bio

John Katunga Murhula was the acting executive director of the Nairobi Peace Initiative-Africa, a pan-African peace resource organization with long experience in peace and reconciliation issues in Africa. John Katunga is currently a research scholar for the Africa Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC where he received the Distinguished African Scholar Award. Katunga has extensive experience in peacebuilding and conflict transformation theories and practices ranging from conflict analysis, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluating, and peacebuilding initiatives and processes. He has strong competencies in facilitation of peace dialogues, community mediation, and reconciliation processes. He teaches in training and higher learning institutions in Africa, the United States, and Europe. John Katunga is also a human rights researcher and activist. A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, he received an MA in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University (US) and an MA and a BA in Political Science from the University of Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"U.S. Policies in the Great Lakes Region of Africa: What Role for Civil Society?"

Project Summary

My project will focus on the peace and security sector. I will explore, with an eye toward mutual benefit, possible paths in which civil society organizations and institutions from the Great Lakes Region of Africa could get involved in U.S. policy formulation for the region as well as in the implementation process.
