Expert Bio

Dr. Tabaré Vázquez is the President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguary. He was sworn in on March 1, 2015 and previously served as President from 2005 to 2010. From 1996 until he assumed the presidency, Dr. Vázquez served as president of the Frente Amplio coalition. Dr. Vázquez was elected mayor of Montevideo in 1989 and served until 1994. 

Throughout his tenure as mayor, Dr. Vázquez was a member of the National Congress of Mayors, serving as its president in 1993. The former president attended medical school at Uruguay's Universidad de la República and graduated with a specialty in oncology and radiology in 1972.  Honoring his life-long vocation, Dr. Vázquez continued to practice medicine even as president, dedicating one morning a week to a Montevideo clinic.
