Expert Bio
Leo Bottrill is the founder and director of Moabi (moabi.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing technology to map and monitor logging, mining, palm oil, and other resource-related infrastructure. Moabi works in partnership with local and international organizations to increase transparency and accountability in natural resource sector, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prior to founding Moabi, Leo worked for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) where he developed several visual and mapping tools to track everything from palm oil plantations in the Indonesian rainforests to copper mining in the Alaskan tundra. He also directed Heart of Iron (heartofiron.org), a documentary film that explores the risks and benefits of iron mining in the remote Congo Basin. Leo holds an MA in Geography from the University of St. Andrews and an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London. He is based in Washington DC.
