Expert Bio

Briana Gunn is the Group Executive of Environment in the corporate headquarters for Newmont Mining Company in Denver, Colorado. She has devoted her career to supporting mining through the full life cycle identifying and mitigating risks around tailings and water management. She holds a BS/MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado and holds a professional engineer licensure. She has extensive experience in planning, design, and closure. Prior to her time at Newmont she worked as a consultant with many global mining companies to support water stewardship and closure evaluations and designs.  

Briana works with the corporate Sustainability & External Relations (S&ER) group at the corporate office to manage compliance with environmental standards and guidelines, evaluate and implement programs that consist of long-term strategies, supports the regions and sites in capacity building and development, collaborates with both Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) and Value Assurance (VA) on projects to ensure compliance with management standards and the alignment with S&ER values and objectives. Her recent activities include supporting the development and implementation of the sustainable practices around water, waste, chemical and land management.  

Briana is a member of several organizations outside of work including Society of Mining Engineers – Young Leaders, Professional Engineers and Environmental Committees.  She is currently serving as the President of a non-profit board for the Institute of Environment Solutions (IES) in Denver.  She participates in local and global seminars, workshops and organizations that support collaboration across the mining industry to strengthen performance including the International Mining and Metals and Water in Mining. She is currently serving as Newmont representatives for ICMM on the water, biodiversity, mercury and land committees as well as the tailings aspirational goal (TAG) group which is working to eliminate wet conventional tailings in the next 15 years.
