Postponed--Uniting for a Healthy Future for People and Nature in Western Tanzania
ATTENTION: This event is postponed until further notice due to flight cancellations.
Since 2011, Pathfinder International, The Nature Conservancy and the Frankfurt Zoological Society have collaborated in Western Tanzania on the Tuungane Project ("Let's Unite" in Kiswahili) - an integrated conservation, health and development project designed to reduce pressures on the diverse Greater Mahale Ecosystem (GME), meet the healthcare needs of local communities, and improve the well-being of women and their families. The project is being implemented in six villages along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa's Great Lakes. Lake Tanganyika holds nearly as much water as all the U.S. Great Lakes combined-an impressive 17 percent of the world's freshwater-and is home to over 250 species of fish found nowhere else in the world. The ecosystem covers a 4.8-million-acre forested landscape that is home to approximately 93 percent of Tanzania's 2,800 endangered chimpanzees.
