Roots of Russia’s War in Ukraine presents four perspectives on the origins of the ongoing war in Ukraine, concentrating on Russian motivations and intentions. What propelled Russia to send troops into Crimea and why did the conflict spread to eastern Ukraine with Russian support? What does the crisis say about Russian political, economic, and social priorities, and how does it reflect EU-Russian differences over international jurisdiction? What role did Russian president Vladimir Putin’s cultivation of his own macho image play in starting and expanding the war? As the recent events in Syria and Turkey have shown, these are still vivid and troubling issues with ramifications for ongoing global conflicts.
